Offered is this antique, circa 1850 “Crossed Laurel” quilt from a Philadelphia area estate. Finely executed appliqué in patterned fabrics. Latticed quilting in white fields between laurel fronds and an undulating feathered vine in all four borders.
Brightly-colored, extensively decorated and virtually perfect silk “crazy-quilt” top. The surface of this quilt is heavily embellished with both embroidered and painted imagery and includes five pairs of initials (presumably the makers) and symbols of love, marriage and household. Wonderful sheetmetal silhouette weathervane / directional in the form of a bull with applied ears and horns (one horn broken and missing). An unsigned, thickly-walled, fluted-facet shape with peaks at the top lip. A form for which I cannot find an exact comparable but one that’s very similar in color, technique and shape to other works produced by Moser in the 1920s-30s for the Austrian designer, architect and co-founder of Wiener Werkstätte, Josef Hoffmann.
The surprise inside of box “No 4”: a miniature house model surrounded by gardens and patios… pillows on furniture, mosaic floors, brick walkways and decorative fencing all constructed with colored cocktail toothpicks.
