Brightly-colored, extensively decorated and virtually perfect silk “crazy-quilt” top.
The surface of this quilt is heavily embellished with both embroidered and painted imagery and includes five pairs of initials (presumably the makers) and symbols of love, marriage and household.
Individual blocks are backed by unwashed cottons still retaining their original high polish glazing.

I believe the absence of the more typically seen “shattered” silks is an indicator that these were higher quality fabrics than those which used lead or other metals in the dying process (silk was sold by weight).
