19th-Century Double-Sided Folk Art Game Board

Painted 19th-century double-sided folk art game board. One side features an incised checkers layout with two-tone green borders and a playing field painted in alternating mottled ochre and reddish brown. On the reverse, the center of the game board is divided into a 16×16 grid defined by incised lines. Within the grid, a light ochre playing field (probably repainted in thicker oil enamel) also features corner decorations in alternating red and black. As on the front, a green border surrounds the design.

Single board with applied moldings on all four sides. A lovely, contracted varnish overall with spots revealing lighter, brighter colors beneath.

Found in Massachusetts.
