Pair of diamond-format framed assemblage compositions, each with a cut 18th-century engraving of a draped classical figure — Hygieia and Flora — mounted in relief between two sheets of glass and backing board, the reverse of the back-most glass painted solid green to form the ground.
Each figure is bordered with a block-printed neoclassical wallpaper of gray acanthus and ribbon motifs.
Of note—there is enough depth in this piece that the paper figures and borders cast a soft shadow onto the green ground beneath them.
On the Flora panel, the green paint has exfoliated in patches, exposing the back board and adding texture to the pair… the Hygieia panel is intact but for minor loss at one corner.
Remains of gilding can be seen on the otherwise red (primer/bole) covered wooden frames.
