Pair of Flame-Shaped 19th-Century Architectural Ornaments

Rather than casting, the now heavily oxidized and brittle zinc was shaped by hammering sheets around a carved wooden form. Two halves were then trimmed and soldered together. Testimony to the likely brutal process are the small folds and overlaps that made the metal behave like fabric.

At the bottom edge of one of the flames are the remains of the tar cloth that would have been used to attach the flames to the form they decorated.

Presented on custom bases.

Dimensions

22-inches tall, overall. Flames measure 15-inches tall.

Condition

A single hole near the top of one flame was created by the process. Seams are stable but slightly separated near the bottom of each. Bases are new material.
