Large and Early Variation on a “Nine Patch” Quilt

Antique American nine-patch variant quilt.

Nine-patch blocks pieced from a broad mix of period printed cotton calicoes (florals, stripes, and small-scale prints) against white. Blocks are set on point and alternate against blocks of a printed blue, rust, and black calico.

Quilting is cleverly conceived and placed. Squares in squares (clearly visible on the back) intersect the fabrics on the front so that the stitch direction seems to alternate between the pieced and solid blocks.

Backed with a course-woven linen/cotton blend.
