Factory Worker Photograph

This early 20th-century group photograph on paper is so well conceived, perfectly composed and expertly executed that it’s virtually impossible that it’s an everyday workplace / vernacular image.

The shape of the group echoes the natural perspective of the factory environment. Its central and highest positioned, very good looking, sole hammer-holding worker also serves as the image’s vanishing point. Streams of light pouring through the clerestory above and behind them is perfectly on cue.

Re-framed in an Adirondack “bow tie” picture frame made with ribbed molding and having exaggerated corner flares. A little over the top to match the otherwise dynamic and heroic posturing of the photo’s subjects.

Inscribed on reverse of photo board in pencil with illegible name at top and “Cortland, N.Y.” below.
