Art Deco carved maple relief panel, two semi-nude male figures in close company — one arm draped across the other’s shoulder — set against a flat ground with grapevines in the upper corners and a dense frieze of fruit and vegetables below.
Classical in subject, modern in handling: the torsos are rendered in broad, confident planes, the composition cropped and close, the lower still life almost cubist in its compression. This unknown carver was skilled and spent considerable time on this composition.
Mid-20th century.
