A blue and white, center-seemed wool and cotton jacquard-woven Delhi, NY coverlet, dated 1838 and attributed to the weaver Asahel Amora Phelps.
The design features large floral and foliate medallions arranged in a repeating field pattern, surrounded by a decorative border of stylized flowers and geometric motifs.
The corner blocks include the familiar spread-winged eagle holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons with woven inscriptions including the early 1838 dateĀ and Delhi.
The coverlet is woven in two panels joined at the center, typical of loom width in the period.
