American Chippendale Tall Chest, Circa 1780s-90s

American Chippendale tall chest with five graduated drawers, cornice molding, and distinctively shaped bracket feet (dig the tombstone and lollipop!). Circa 1780s–1790s and purportedly from eastern Massachusetts.

The survival of the original finish is perhaps most remarkable—so many pieces from this period have been entirely refinished over the past century. And while they remain interesting forms… well. Somehow this chest escaped the trend and retains a completely intact, now-granulated shellac over the original light red-brown painted surface.

Dimensions

56 inches tall

Condition

The brasses are all older replacements, the face of the left foot was broken and refastened (clean break), there’s an 8-inch section of cove molding absent from the cornice on the chest’s proper right side, and a fresher loss of thumb molding along the top right edge of the third drawer (kindly recolored by a previous owner). Other wear and old losses as expected.
