Hand-carved marble capital with four identical carved faces, each having a pair of scrolled volutes flanking a central fan of pointed acanthus leaves, rising from a turned circular foot.
Stone has a creamy white cast with light toning and surface wear consistent with age. The carving is covered with the softened chatter marks that resulted from each mallet blow to the chisel.
Compass-scribed centering lines and other markings from the time of its making still mark the top and bottom surfaces.
Late 19th to early 20th century.
