From an estate south of Boston is this spectacular antique 19th-century, hand-sewn, pieced “Double Irish Chain” quilt in red, white and tan.
An interesting variation on the “Irish Chain” theme because the pattern most often has a diagonal orientation whereas this has a strict horizontal/vertical layout.
Negative white spaces between the colored bands have been heavily quilted with meticulous “feathered wreath” designs. Maple leaves are also dominant theme on the piece with one quilted into the center of each feathered wreath as well as each corner square of the white blocks (detail image).
The earthy tan color, once a bright green, is the end result of a particular 1870s dye whose talent for fading is now well known.
Overall the cottons are soft from washing.
The backing fabric is a courser white cotton grade.
